It is not always the full moons. The quarter moon impersonates a football through the goal post of the Inner light station and the Light House in Grand Haven.

The moon does not emanate light, it reflects from the sun. Sometimes, the sun reflecting from the earth, lights up the dark side of the moon, which is what is seen in this image know as Earthshine.
